Why a boiling water tap has a filter
The filter takes something out of the mains water before it reaches the tank or the tap. How much it removes depends on the filter, and we do not publish removal figures because the manufacturers' own claims are not comparable. What our data does hold is the filter description and, for most models, how often the cartridge is due for replacement. That interval matters when you compare the cost of owning a tap over several years.
What the filter type tells you
The filter type column is copied from the manufacturer. The common wording is carbon or carbon block. Some brands describe the cartridge by what it protects: the Franke Instante is listed with a filter described as boiler limescale protection. Several taps use a two-stage or five-stage cartridge, and the Franke water hubs add an ion-exchange resin.
Every 6 months or every 12
The 13 models on a 6 month interval come from Abode, Arnotap, Fohen, Franke, Hanstrom and Qettle. The 8 models on 12 months come from Franke, Grohe and Zip Water. A longer interval means fewer cartridges to buy, but cartridge size, price and flow rate differ, so compare the whole cartridge before you decide.
For 6 models we have no interval: Quooker Classic Fusion, Quooker Flex, Quooker Front, Quooker Fusion Round, Quooker Nordic Round Single Tap and Quooker Nordic Square Twintaps. Check the manufacturer's instructions before you assume a date.
To see what a tap costs to run on top of the filter, use the running cost calculator. Quooker owners can start from the Quooker brand page, and Franke owners from the Franke brand page.
