Methodology

Eight years selling these taps. Now an independent comparison platform.

boilingwatertap.com is built by the team behind Next Day Online, a Netherlands-based boiling water tap retailer that sold over 3 million euros of taps between 2016 and 2024 and advised hundreds of households on selection, installation and after-care. We exited retail in 2024 and rebuilt that institutional knowledge as an independent, UK-focused comparison platform.

That history matters because it shapes what we know and what we are honest about not knowing. We know how Quooker tanks fail at year five, which Fohen finishes survive hard water, where Qettle support is strong and where it is slow. We do not run a UK test kitchen and we will never claim we did. What we publish here is verifiable data plus normalisation, scored against the same rubric for every model.

Dealing with every major brand

What we are

  • An ex-retailer with eight years of real install + support data.
  • An aggregator of published manufacturer specs and energy labels.
  • A normaliser that scores every model against one transparent rubric.
  • A calculator engine for your real running costs.
  • A review aggregator that surfaces what owners actually say.

What we are not

  • A UK test kitchen with our own dB meter and energy clamp.
  • A 30-day group-test reviewer.
  • A YouTube channel with hands-on demos.
  • An installer or after-sales service (we exited retail in 2024).

AI disclosure

Our content is AI-assisted. We use LLM workflows to parse manufacturer datasheets, aggregate owner reviews and draft comparison articles from structured data. Every published page is reviewed by a human editor before going live and every specification, price and warranty claim is cross-checked against the manufacturer source. We do not publish AI-generated experiential claims such as kitchen tests or noise readings. The institutional knowledge that shapes our trade-off judgements comes from real retail experience, not from a model.

Our data sources

  • Manufacturer product datasheets and spec PDFs
  • ErP energy labels and Ecodesign declarations
  • Manufacturer installation and service manuals
  • Verified owner reviews on Trustpilot, Amazon UK, Currys, John Lewis
  • UK water-company hardness reports per postcode
  • Ofgem energy cap rates (refreshed each quarter)
  • ASA-approved manufacturer claims (we flag claims that have been challenged)
  • Eight years of NDO customer-installation logs (anonymised) from the Dutch retail business

The eight criteria, in order of weight.

Boiling temperature

15%

We compare the manufacturer-stated dispense temperature against the spec sheet and the ErP energy label. UK marketing claims (typically 100 degrees C) and US dispenser standards (93-99 degrees C) differ. We surface the actual number, not the headline.

Energy use

15%

Idle wattage matters more than peak wattage because the tank reheats constantly. We take the manufacturer-published idle wattage from the ErP energy declaration, normalise to a 24-hour standby load, and convert to annual kWh at the current Ofgem cap rate. Lower is better. Our running-cost calculator lets you run the same numbers against your own tariff.

Tank capacity vs household

10%

A 2L tank in a six-person home is a daily frustration. A 7L tank in a galley kitchen will not fit under the sink. We score capacity for the realistic household size each model suits, not in absolute litres. Source: manufacturer spec sheets and installer guidance gathered across eight years of selling these taps in the Netherlands.

Filter cost

10%

For 4-in-1 taps with filtration, ongoing filter replacement is a hidden ownership cost. We calculate the 10-year filter total per model using manufacturer cartridge prices and recommended replacement intervals, then weight against the headline price.

Safety features

10%

Childproof handles, double-press requirement, insulated spouts, light indicators, automatic shutoff. We cross-reference the safety-features list on the manufacturer datasheet against the user manual and against verified owner reviews where safety is mentioned.

Installation complexity

10%

DIY-friendly, needs a plumber, needs a plumber and an electrician, needs structural changes. We score based on the manufacturer install guide combined with public installer day rates in our 15 UK cities database, and against the install issues we logged across hundreds of NDO customer fittings between 2016 and 2024.

Warranty

10%

Warranty terms range from 1 to 7 years on the tank, with some brands offering extended cover via registration. We compare the small print on the official warranty page: tank versus tap coverage, transferability, what counts as fair use, and how the brand handles claims based on aggregated owner reports from Trustpilot, Amazon and direct-retailer review sections.

Total cost of ownership

20%

Headline price + installation + 10 years of electricity + 10 years of filter changes. This is the only number that matters when you weigh a 695 GBP Qettle against a 1295 GBP Quooker. We do the math from public data so you do not have to.

Independence is a process, not a slogan.

We earn affiliate commission on some purchases made through links on this site. That commission is a fraction of a percent on most retailers, slightly higher on direct deals with challenger brands. The commission rate never changes how a model ranks against the rubric. If the cheapest 4-in-1 tap wins on the public data, it wins on the page, regardless of what we earn when you click through.

When a brand sponsors editorial content, the post is labelled "Sponsored" in the hero and in the URL. Sponsored content lives in a separate section and is never cross-promoted into comparisons.

When we update a verdict because the underlying data changed, the change is timestamped on the page. Every model page shows the last-data-refresh date so you know how fresh the comparison is.
