Dealing with every major brand

In 2016, Peter Davelaar started selling boiling water taps online in the Netherlands through Next Day Online B.V. What began as a small specialised retailer grew over eight years into a recognised name in the Dutch market, with cumulative sales of over EUR 3 million across every category of instant boiling water tap.

Along the way, the organisation advised hundreds of households on the decisions that actually matter: which model fits the household size, what the installation really costs, whether a 4-in-1 filter is worth the recurring cartridge bill, how hard water shortens tank life, and how the lifetime running cost compares to a kettle. The team dealt directly with every major brand we now write about, including Quooker, Franke, Qettle, Fohen, InSinkErator, Hanstrom, Zip and Arnotap, across thousands of customer conversations, install issues, warranty claims and after-sales calls.

That accumulated knowledge, built up case by case over almost a decade, is the foundation we now apply to the UK market through this platform.

Why we exited retail

We exited retail in 2024 because the value had shifted from selling to deciding. A boiling water tap is a durable purchase. Most owners keep the same unit for ten years or more. The decision the buyer has to make in the few weeks before ordering matters far more than the transaction itself, and that decision is surprisingly hard to get right.

Specifications are scattered across manufacturer PDFs. Energy claims are normalised differently between brands. Filter costs are buried in the small print. Warranty cover ranges from one to seven years and the headline number rarely tells the full story. Owners want impartial guidance on installation, running cost and long-term reliability, and they want it before they commit to a purchase that will sit in their kitchen for the next decade.

Retail-bias makes that guidance hard to trust. When the same organisation advising you also takes the order, every recommendation lives under a quiet conflict of interest. By stepping out of the sales role, we can publish what we genuinely think without a sales-target conflict. The institutional knowledge stays. The cash register does not.

We explain the affiliate model and the editorial firewall in detail on our independence page.

How we make the content

Every comparison on this site is built from three inputs: manufacturer spec data, owner reviews aggregated from Trustpilot and Amazon UK, and our own retail rubrics built up over eight years of dealing with these products. We do not run a UK test kitchen and we will never claim we did. What we publish is verifiable data plus normalisation, scored against the same rubric for every model.

The full methodology, including the eight criteria and how we weight them, is documented on How we review. The way we aggregate verified owner reviews from public sources is detailed on Owner review methodology.

Who is behind this

Boilingwatertap.com is run by Peter Davelaar, founder of Next Day Online B.V. and the person who built and ran the specialised Dutch boiling tap retail business between 2016 and 2024. Peter leads editorial direction, sets the comparison rubrics, and signs off every published verdict.

The full editorial team and their areas of focus are listed on the authors page.
