Boiling water tap reliability by brand 2026: who owners complain about

A boiling water tap is not a kettle. It is a plumbed-in appliance with a pressurised tank that sits under your sink holding water near 100°C around the clock, for a decade or more. When it fails, you do not just buy a new kettle; you book an engineer, and sometimes you replace a tank that costs more than a whole cheap tap. Manufacturers do not publish failure rates, and Amazon does not rank brands by how often they go wrong. This page does the closest honest thing we can: it ranks the brands by what their owners actually report.

The figures below come from each brand's own Trustpilot page, read on 3 August 2026. We use two numbers: the average score, and the share of reviewers who left one or two stars, which is the clearest signal of how often an owner has a genuinely bad experience. We do not reproduce individual reviews, and these are brand-wide records covering sales, installation and service, not a single model. Read them as a read on the company, not a lab reliability test.

Two things jump out. Quooker is in a class of its own: fewer than one owner in fifty leaves a poor review, across a review base larger than every other brand on this page combined. And there is a clear cliff between the top five, all under 11% negative, and the bottom three, all above a quarter.

What the numbers mean, and the Franke catch

Read the Franke row carefully, because it shows why a single headline score can mislead. Franke's average TrustScore is 4.5, which looks mid-pack, yet its all-time star distribution has 33.6% of reviews at one or two stars, the worst on this page. Both figures come from Trustpilot. The reason they disagree is that the TrustScore is time-weighted, so recent reviews count for more, while the star distribution is the full history. In plain terms: Franke appears to have improved recently, but it carries a heavy tail of unhappy owners from an earlier period. If you are buying a Franke, weigh the recent trend against that history rather than trusting the 4.5 alone.

Fohen sits in a similar but clearer spot: a 3.8 average with a quarter of reviewers at one or two stars is a genuinely weaker record, not a time-weighting artefact. Hanstrom, on a small review base of 309, is weaker still. None of this means every unit fails. It means the odds of a bad ownership experience are materially higher at the value end than with Quooker, Qettle or Zip.

A caveat that cuts the other way: the premium brands sell more units through professional installers, and a bad install produces a bad review that reads as a product fault. Some of the gap is fit quality, not tap quality. But a 15 to 30 point difference in complaint rate is too large to explain away entirely.

Warranty length: how exposed you are when something goes wrong

The warranty is the other half of the reliability question. It decides who pays when a tank or valve fails outside the first year. Here is the cover across the current range, by brand.

This reorders the picture in a useful way. Quooker has the best owner record but only a 2-year warranty, and its SWAP scheme is a paid tank replacement, not an extension. The brands that give you the longest cover, Abode at five years and Zip and Arnotap at three, are making a longer promise about their own hardware. The riskiest combination on this page is a brand with both a high complaint rate and a short warranty: Hanstrom pairs the worst-but-one owner record with a single year of cover, and the cheaper Fohen models pair a weak record with one to two years. If you buy at the value end, budget for the possibility that a wear part fails just after the warranty ends.

The failure cause nobody sells against: hard water

There is one factor that sits underneath all of these brand numbers, and it is your water. Scale is the most common cause of boiling water tap tank failure, and it is the failure manufacturers most often exclude from warranty. Most of the south and east of England runs hard to very hard. A tank held at near-boiling temperature is the ideal place for limescale to form, and scale is what kills tanks and blocks valves over a five to ten year horizon. This is why the value brands' reliability records matter more if you live in London, Cambridge, Ipswich or the wider hard-water belt: a cheaper tank in hard water is doing the hardest job with the least margin.

Two practical defences change the maths. A tap with a built-in scale-inhibiting filter, and a disciplined filter-replacement schedule, slows the process. In a very hard area, a whole-house softener protects the tank far more than any brand choice. Which brands are the safe bets, and which carry more risk

On the evidence here, three brands are the low-risk picks. Quooker is the clear leader on owner record, and you pay for it. Qettle gives you the second-best complaint rate at 4.5% and a true 100°C boil for around half the Quooker price, which is the strongest value-versus-reliability trade on the page. Zip and InSinkErator both sit under 10% negative with two or three years of cover, and Abode backs a decent record with the longest warranty at five years.

The brands that need more thought are the ones with a complaint rate above a quarter. Fohen and Hanstrom compete hard on price and finishes, and for a low-usage kitchen in a soft-water area they can be fine value; but going in, treat the shorter warranty and the weaker owner record as real, and register the warranty on day one. Franke is the special case: judge it on its recent trend rather than the historical tail, and get the exact warranty terms in writing before you commit.
