26 models, one method: list price plus ten years of standby electricity at 27p per kWh. Here is where every tap lands.

Purchase price is only part of what a boiling water tap costs you. We took the 26 models in our database with a published price and a published standby figure, ran ten years of standby electricity at 27p per kWh, and ranked every tap by the combined total. The gap between first and last place is £4,681.

How we compared

Ten-year total = manufacturer list price plus manufacturer-published standby power over ten years at a stated 27p per kWh (standby watts x 8,760 x 10 / 1,000 x 0.27). Only the 26 active models with both a published price and a published idle figure are included; missing values are excluded, not estimated. Filters, CO2, installation and servicing are excluded and stated as such.

A boiling water tap keeps a tank of water at or near 100C around the clock, and that costs money every hour it sits there doing nothing. Manufacturers publish this standby figure, but almost nobody puts it next to the purchase price. We do, because every UK model sits in our database as structured data, which means we can rank the whole market on one calculation instead of guessing.

This article ranks 26 boiling water taps sold in the UK by their indicative ten-year cost: list price plus ten years of standby electricity. The cheapest tap on this measure costs £511.87 over a decade. The most expensive costs £5,192.82.

How we calculated this

The method is deliberately simple, and every input is in the open so you can check or redo it.

We started from our model database and took every active model with both a published list price and a published standby power figure. That gives 26 taps. Models missing either number are excluded rather than estimated.

For each tap we calculated ten years of standby electricity like this:

standby watts x 8,760 hours per year x 10 years / 1,000 x £0.27 per kWh

Three assumptions sit inside that formula, and you should know all of them:

Electricity at 27p per kWh. We use £0.27 per kWh as a working figure for the UK average unit price in mid 2026. Your tariff will differ. Every standby figure below scales linearly with the unit price, so at 30p per kWh each number is about 11 per cent higher.

The tap stays on all year. We assume 8,760 hours of standby per year, so no holiday shutdowns and no timer. That matches how most owners actually run these taps.

Purchase and standby only. The totals below exclude filter cartridges, CO2 cylinders for sparkling models, installation and servicing. Filters alone typically add a meaningful yearly cost, so treat these totals as a floor, not a full cost of ownership. One more note on the standby figures themselves: they are the manufacturers' published idle power ratings as recorded in our database. They cover keeping the tank hot, not the energy used to heat the water you actually draw off, which you would use in some form with a kettle too.

What the numbers show

A watt of standby costs about £24 over ten years

At 27p per kWh, one watt of continuous standby draw works out at £23.65 over a decade. Idle figures in this dataset run from 9 W (Hanstrom Ume) to 35 W (Zip HydroTap Cube Plus and Classic), so the spread in standby cost alone is £212.87 to £827.82. That £615 gap is more than twice the purchase price of the cheapest tap in the table.

Quooker's flat 10 W changes how its range ranks

All eleven Quooker models in the dataset carry the same 10 W idle rating, the second lowest figure in the table after the Hanstrom Ume's 9 W. Every Quooker therefore adds an identical £236.52 in standby over ten years, and the order within the Quooker range is decided purely by list price, from the £1,050 Nordic singles to the £1,450 Classic Fusion pair.

That low idle draw also produces the clearest overtake in the ranking. The Qettle Signature Modern with the 7 litre tank lists at £945, which is £105 less than a Quooker Nordic single tap. But its 18 W idle rating, the highest of any tap outside the Zip and Franke Mythos machines, adds £425.74 in standby against the Quooker's £236.52. Over ten years the Qettle finishes at £1,370.74 and the Quooker at £1,286.52. The tap that was £105 cheaper in the showroom ends up £84.22 more expensive.

The same crossover happens in the mid market

The InSinkErator 3N1 J-Shape lists at £899, which is £29 more than the Qettle Signature Modern 4L at £870. The InSinkErator idles at 11 W, the Qettle at 14 W. Run both for ten years and the InSinkErator's total is £1,159.17 against the Qettle's £1,201.13, so the dearer tap to buy is £41.96 cheaper to own. The differences are small at this level, but the direction matters: within a £100 price band, a 3 W difference in idle draw is enough to reorder the table.

Within Qettle's own range the pattern repeats. The £795 Signature idles at 11 W while the cheaper £620 Original idles at 14 W, so the gap between them shrinks from £175 at purchase to £104.04 over ten years.

At the top of the table, standby stops mattering; at the bottom, it dominates

The three Zip HydroTap models idle at 30 to 35 W, the highest figures in the dataset. The Zip HydroTap Classic's ten-year standby bill of £827.82 is larger than the entire ten-year total of the Hanstrom Ume, purchase included. Yet on a £4,365 machine that £827.82 is only 15.9 per cent of the total. Compare the bottom of the price range: standby makes up 41.6 per cent of the Hanstrom Ume's ten-year cost and 40.1 per cent of the InSinkErator GN1100's. The cheaper the tap, the more of what you will ever spend on it goes on electricity.

Franke shows the same split inside one brand. The Minerva and Omni both idle at 12 W, while the six-function Mythos Water Hub idles at 25 W, more than double its stablemates, adding £591.30 in standby over the decade.

The market compresses once you count running costs

On purchase price the dearest tap costs 14.6 times the cheapest (£4,365 against £299). On ten-year totals the ratio drops to 10.1 times (£5,192.82 against £511.87), because standby adds at least £212.87 to every model and proportionally more to the cheap end. Half the dataset, 13 of 26 models, idles at 10 W or less; the rest runs from 11 W to 35 W, and that is where owners quietly pay the difference.
